Club Fund Raiser April 2025

The Club Committee organised a fund raising event on 30 April. After some very entertaining bowling, the bowlers and their guests enjoyed a filling Afternoon Tea. The money raised will go into committee funds to support bowling at the club, including the recently re-equipped store where the club bowls are kept.

Club Competition Finals 2025

The Club held our club competition finals on 4th and 5th March being the culmination of a variety of competitions which started in January.The matches were exciting and closely contested and medals were presented to the winners and runners-up by Ze Martins.

John Macrae won the Open Singles and also won the 2 Wood Pairs with Russell Morris. The Drawn Pairs was won by Russell Morris and John Tilley, and the Fixed Jack was won by Glen Moulds. Catherine Webb and Alex Martins won the Mixed Australian Pairs.

Australian Pairs Tournament 2025

Our annual Australian Pairs Tournament ran from 24th to 29th March and attracted an international line-up of 56 players from The Algarve, UK, Ireland and Holland. Following an initial round-robin stage the bowlers were streamed into two groups for the knock-out stages. The main tournament was won by Dave ‘Mackie’ McFarquar and Ze Martins. The subsidiary Plate was won by Allan Milburn and Paul Beardmore.

Monday League 2024 - 2025

Our popular Monday League ran from 25 November to 10 March and consisted of a variety of games formats. We had good support for the league with a consistently high number of entries. The places were decided on the final day of the league with the top two changing places!

In joint third place were Maggie Dance and Mark Johnson, second place was taken by Glen Moulds and Julie Moulds took first place. The winners were awarded medals and vouchers to spend in our Drakes Pride shop.

Crown Green Singles Tournament 2025

We ran our annual Crown Green Singles Tournament from 24th to 28th February with a prize fund of 1505€. We had anticipated an entry of 40 bowlers from across The Algarve and the UK, but unfortunately a number of bowlers had to withdraw shortly before the tournament commenced. The vast majority of the bowlers travelled from the UK and stopped in our onsite apartments. Following an initial round robin stage, the bowlers were streamed into two groups - one continuing in the Tournament won for the third time by Steve McManus, and the other in a subsidiary Shield won by Peter Case. Both bowlers had travelled from the UK for the event. The week ended with a very enjoyable drawn doubles competition won by Terry Norman and ‘Pedro” Yates.

Charity Fundraiser 2024-25

We held our annual fundraiser for a local charity during our Christmas Celebration event and raised a total of 325€ for a local charity. All the raffle prizes were donated by Club members and the draw took place after the Christmas lunch.

In January the funds raised were donated to the Cassa de Nossa Senhora da Conceicao, which is a local home for girls in Portimao. The funds were gratefully received.

Christmas Celebrations 2024

We had great festive celebrations at Alvor Bowls Club on 17th December followed by a fabulous Christmas lunch served up by Emma and her attentive staff at Oasis Parque. The fun bowling was a series of round-robin ends based on ‘targets and strings’ and the winning triple were Denise Redding, Maggie Dance and Mark Johnson. They were awarded some great prizes donated by Bella and Dave Benade before they relocate back to South Africa. Prizes were also presented to runners-up Russell Morris, Bella and Dave and to third placed Janet and John Tilley and Meira Price. The players enjoyed some warming mulled wine served up with home made sausage rolls and mince pies courtesy of Mark Johnson part way through the games - the bowling lines weren’t quite as straight after the mulled wine but nobody worried about that!

Alvor Crown Green Doubles Tournament 2024

We ran a new Crown Green Doubles Tournament from 11th to 15th November where you played with your nominated partner. The tournament had a total prize fund of 1490€ and attracted a field of 16 pairs of mainly UK based bowlers.

The pairs played in round-robin matches in two groups of eight for the first four days of the tournament, and then the top two teams in each group played in semi-finals and final on the last day. Steve and Chrissie McManus emerged as winners, beating Geoff Bailey and Gerry Kinane.

Alvor Crown Green Drawn Doubles Tournament 2024

Our annual Crown Green Drawn Doubles Tournament ran from 4th to 8th November. The Tournament attracted a field of 40 bowlers, most of whom were visiting from the UK to play in the competition. The total prize fund was 1890€ plus the opportunity to get your name on the coveted trophy!

Partners were drawn on a daily basis with the pairs playing in group round robin matches to determine daily results. At the end of the Tournament, Geoff Coleman emerged as the winner with the highest number of points scored over the 4 days of bowling.

Top Block Challenge Cup 2024

Alvor Bowls Club hosted the inaugural Top Block Challenge Cup on 6th November on the ‘day-off’ from the Crown Green Drawn Doubles Tournament. This challenge aims to promote greater awareness of mental heath issues, with the challenge coming from a number of the visiting bowlers fronted by The Sarge. The match involved the home side playing with lawn bowls and crown green bowls against the challengers, with the home team enjoying the win this year. The Challenge Cup will be played for annually and The Sarge is now introducing extra training for the Top Block team to play in 2025!

Ladies vs Gents Season Opener 2024

We held our annual season opener on 1st October with our traditional challenge match between the ladies and the gents.There was a good turnout of both players and supporters, and this year the gents turned the tables on the ladies with a dominant win to reclaim the trophy. It was good to see everyone coming together and enjoying the competition and then socialising over lunch and drinks afterwards.

Alvor Triples Tournament 2024

The Alvor Triples Tournament ran from 23rd to 27th September when 15 teams from across the UK, Republic of Ireland and The Algarve competed for the Triples Trophy and a share of the 2040€ prize pot.

Following round-robin stages over the first four days of the tournament, the best four teams entered the semi-finals and final. At the end of the regulation ends, the final was tied and an extra end had to be played to produce a winner. The Lawn Rangers from the UK triumphed giving the win to Ken Clark, Carl Stratton and Mark ‘Sharky’ White. The runners-up were Paul Sutton, Jenny Sutton and Debbie Stewart, who all bowl for Floresta at Aldeia Azul in The Algarve.
